If you have walked past Prince’s Park—affectionately known as the world’s smallest park—over the last few days, you will have noticed a breathtaking transformation. Once again, the Burntwood Action Group has unveiled our annual Armistice Day display, turning this historic little corner of our town into a vibrant, moving tribute to those who served and sacrificed.

A True Community Effort

While the park itself may be small, the heart and effort behind this year’s display are anything but. What you see wrapping the trees, draping the railings, and cascading across the ground is the result of months of tireless dedication.

Every single poppy in this display has been lovingly hand-knitted or crocheted by members of our local community. Alongside the traditional red poppies representing sacrifice and remembrance, our knitters also crafted purple poppies—including a striking horse head tribute and a loyal service dog—to honour the countless animals that served alongside our troops. Look up into the canopy, and you will even spot a silhouette aircraft suspended among the poppy garlands, standing watch over the silent soldier silhouettes and “Lest We Forget” signs at the park gates.

To every single person who picked up their knitting needles, donated yarn, and gave their time over the past several months: thank you. Your stitches have woven our community closer together.

Behind the Scenes: Pam’s “Sewing Factory”

Creating thousands of individual poppies is only half the battle; bringing them together into a weather-resistant outdoor installation is a mammoth task in itself.

We want to extend a massive, special thank you to Pam, who took on the painstaking job of sewing the poppies onto the camouflage netting. For the past few months, Pam’s house was effectively transformed into a full-time sewing factory! Without her patience, dedication, and countless hours of behind-the-scenes work, this stunning cascade of poppies simply wouldn’t have been possible.

(Note: You can also thank the local groups featured on the park plaque here, such as the Friends of the Park, Burntwood WI, Burntwood Rotary Club, and local supporters!)

Join Us on Remembrance Sunday

A display like this is meant to bring people together in reflection, and we would love for as many folks as possible to join us as we pay our respects.

  • Date: Sunday, 8th November
  • Time: From 10:00 AM onwards
  • Location: Prince’s Park (The World’s Smallest Park), Burntwood

We will be gathering to watch the Parade and to stand together in observance of the two-minute silence at 11:00 AM. We are also delighted and honoured that the congregation from Christ Church will be joining us at the park this year. Please wrap up warm and come stand with your neighbours.

Support the Royal British Legion

If you have walked past the park, taken photos, or been moved by the months of hard work our volunteers have poured into this tribute, we ask that you consider showing your appreciation by supporting the Royal British Legion.

Every donation helps provide vital, lifelong support to serving and ex-serving personnel and their families.
