The recent decision by Lichfield District Council to approve the new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) site on Lions Den, Hammerwich, has left many in the community with serious questions. Our own recent investigation, a firsthand ride along the two proposed construction traffic routes, has only deepened these concerns.

Route 1 vs. Route 2: A Clear Case of Common Sense Ignored

The difference between the two routes is stark. Route 1, which was ultimately rejected, is a more direct, shorter, and far more sensible option for the large construction vehicles that will be accessing the site. It is a route that would have minimised disruption to local residents and presented fewer safety hazards.

In contrast, the approved Route 2 is a long and treacherous path, completely ill-suited for heavy construction traffic. It’s a decision that, on the face of it, seems to defy logic and common sense. Why would a council approve a route that is more dangerous and disruptive when a better alternative was available?

The Legality of a ‘Fast-Track’ Decision

This bewildering choice of route is just one piece of a larger, more troubling puzzle. The planning application for the BESS site was fast-tracked, leaving a distinct lack of opportunity for proper scrutiny of the information presented. This is a major concern, as the public and local representatives should have the time and ability to thoroughly examine the details of a development that will have a significant impact on our community.

We are now looking into the legality of this fast-tracked approval process. The lack of transparency and the apparent disregard for a more sensible traffic plan raises serious questions about how these decisions are made and whose interests they truly serve.

We believe that local councils have a duty to not only follow the letter of the law but also to act in the best interests of their residents. In this case, it appears that both common sense and due process may have been overlooked. We will continue to follow this story and push for answers.
