This week, the government announced its plan to clear the path for almost 100,000 new homes. While we agree that building more homes is essential to tackling the housing crisis, we believe it must be done in a way that protects our precious green spaces.

We urgently need a change to the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) so that Green Fields are NOT removed from the Green Belt. These areas of countryside are vital for wildlife, carbon capture, flood prevention, and our community’s wellbeing. Once lost, they are gone forever.
Instead, the government should stick to its existing proposal to prioritise the “Grey Belt” – previously developed land such as disused car parks, petrol stations, and derelict urban spaces. These are the right places to build, not the fields that make our towns and villages greener, healthier, and more resilient.
We absolutely need more homes – but we can do it without sacrificing the very landscapes that make our communities special.
This task force is a threat, they can steamroller over our countryside..

Let’s build the homes we need, in the right place, at the right time – not at the cost of our Green Belt.
