The news we all feared has been confirmed. Cameron Homes has officially submitted a formal planning application to Lichfield District Council. Their goal? To build a sprawling development of 430 houses on the precious Green Belt land situated between Highfields Road and the M6 Toll.

If you’ve walked past the site recently, you’ve likely seen the yellow planning notice posted nearby. This notice isn’t just a piece of paper—it’s a starting gun. The formal consultation period has begun, and the future of our village’s landscape depends on our collective response.

Why This Matters

This isn’t just about “more houses.” This is about the fundamental identity of Hammerwich and the surrounding Burntwood area. For years, this land has served as a vital buffer, preventing urban sprawl and providing a “green lung” for our community.

The developer is expected to argue that this is “Grey Belt” land—a relatively new planning term used to describe lower-quality Green Belt areas. However, we know that this land provides essential open space, supports local wildlife, and maintains the distinct character of our village. Once it is paved over, it is gone forever.

The Impact on Our Infrastructure

Our local services are already stretched to the limit. A development of 450 homes could bring:

  • Increased Traffic: Significant pressure on Highfields Road and surrounding junctions.
  • School Capacity: Hundreds of new families requiring places in already oversubscribed local schools.
  • Healthcare Strain: Longer wait times at local GP surgeries and dental practices.
  • Environmental Loss: Permanent loss of hedgerows, fields, and natural habitats.

What Happens Next?

We cannot stop this application with emotion alone; we must fight it with legal, material planning objections. Under planning law, the Council can only refuse an application based on specific “material considerations.” General complaints about “losing a view” or “house prices” are usually disregarded. We need to focus on:

  • Inconsistency with the Local Plan.
  • Traffic safety and congestion.
  • Impact on the Green Belt and “Grey Belt” definitions.
  • Drainage and flood risks.

How You Can Help

Right now, we are meticulously reviewing the full technical documents submitted by Cameron Homes. We are identifying the strongest legal grounds to challenge this proposal.

Here is what you can do today:

  1. Stay Informed: Follow this blog and our social media pages for updates.
  2. Spread the Word: Talk to your neighbours. Many people see the yellow notices but don’t realise the scale of what is being proposed.
  3. Prepare to Object: We will shortly be publishing a “How-to-Object” Guide, including the specific Planning Application Reference Number and bullet points of the most effective legal arguments to include in your letters to the Council.

This is our home. Let’s protect it.
