The promise to build 1.5 million homes by 2029 is a massive goal, but it feels like a promise made without doing the math—or considering the cost to our local areas and precious land.

The irony is the targets are not sustainable (already falling well short) and are pushing developers toward the path of least resistance:

👉 Green Belt Under Threat: High targets pressure developers to use easier Green Belt (Grey Belt) sites rather than tackle the more complex work of redeveloping brownfield sites that actually need it.

👉 Infrastructure Collapse: Local roads, doctors’ surgeries, and schools can’t cope now. We’re adding new homes without addressing these fundamental needs for the existing population first.

👉 Local authorities are pushing back, saying they simply can’t accommodate the numbers.

👉 We have major shortages in ALL main building materials and a massive skilled labour crisis.

👉 With economic uncertainty, house sales are slowing across the country.

We need a realistic plan that prioritises sustainable development and investment in existing infrastructure, not impossible targets that just lead to Green Belt erosion.

What do you think is the biggest flaw in this housing strategy?
